In this video, Nathan Glazer discusses E.D Hirsch's new book "The Making of Americans" and talks about how the topics it covers and how important it is in education. They discuss how his idea of having background knowledge makes reading easier is starting a movement and is something that is being greatly overlooked.
I agree with the point that having background knowledge makes it much easier to comprehend and enjoy what you are reading. If you do not have background knowledge about the topic you are reading about, then it will be very hard to understand and you will find yourself losing interest at a very quick rate. I find it very interesting how E.D Hirsch takes such a simple idea and shows how important it is in reading and education in general. I did however, find this video difficult to understand and follow along with. I felt that Nathan Glazer would somewhat jump around and that made it hard for me to follow along with the points he was discussing. They also discuss how E.D Hirsch is being overlooked and should be given more attention. I agree with this notion for I feel that Hirsch makes some very good points and his book is full of knowledge that everyone should aquire.
